In 1995, I bought a new Cub Cadet lawn tractor and very promptly discovered that "feature" and told the dealer I had no use for the machine unless that feature could be disabled. He first told me that Federal law required that feature, and that it was "illegal" for them to disable it, but when he realized that I was serious, he said the mechanic could "show" me how to unplug it myself (I was leaving it with him to correct a problem with the steering). When I went back to get it, the mechanic told me it had been disabled, but that he'd deny it if I told the boss. So I didn't actually see how it was done, although he told it was just a matter of unplugging a connector on the left rear side of the engine.

Now I just recently bought a new Craftsman lawn tractor with the manual (lever) activated PTO instead of the electric clutch and it will certainly mow in reverse without deactivating the PTO, so I doubt that there is any "law" requiring such a feature.

At any rate, I, too, have no intention of turning the PTO off and on 30+ times to mow my yard (and mine, too, would require at least that many times).

Mark, on a lot of earlier models (like my B7100) there really was another step (bleed at the injector pump), but on a lot of the later models, there really isn't. What you just described is all that was necessary on my B2710. And the manual is undoubtedly right about the cleaning procedure, but for what those filter elements cost, I never "cleaned" one; I just replaced them with a new one.

Peters, the mud daubers are a big problem in my area, too. I spray inside my shop with diazinon two or three times a year and that provides only partial control. Anything that isn't used, or a motor that isn't run regularly, and has any opening they can get into will probably have their nests.

MOrgan, many of the ag tractors have rear wheels that are adjustable to change the width of the track, and some also have adjustable front ones. On at least some of the two wheel drive tractors, you actually adjust the width of the front axle.

I still have my Nikon ZoomTouch 500 35mm, and like you, I'd be glad to sell it for 25% of what I paid for it 13 years ago.LOL Works great (or did the last time I used it), but now I only use the digital camera.

My digital camera is an Olympus D-460ZOOM, 1.3 megapixel, 3X optical zoom, 2X digital zoom, and I'm very happy with it, but do believe the Nikon Coolpix would be an even better camera; just didn't want to spend the extra money.

Alpena, I don't know all the specs and differences, so maybe someone else will, but I think the biggest difference is the fact that the L3010 is a hydrostatic transmission instead of the manual that the L3000DT has. It's a little more of a "deluxe" model and personally, I'd much rather have the 3010.

Tim, I'm not familiar enough with the 3010, but look closely at that manual. My B2710 had two drains in the oil pan because the pan came down on both sides of the front driveshaft, so I suspect yours is similar. And the 2710 had 4 places to drain hydraulic fluid (in addition to the two strainers - later models only have one strainer). I missed one of the hydraulic drain plugs the first time I changed it.

Dean, a new B2710 with LA401 loader cost me $15,500 in '99 (first year they were out). I know someone who recently bought a new one for a couple hundred less (LA402 loader now). Of course that's in Texas, so don't know about your area.

Mark, in my opinion, the simple answer to your question is Yes. I've heard of a few, but the fact is that "compact tractors" (as we know them today) are relatively new, and it seems primarily owned by homeowners who are not really farmers, and 100-150 hours a year is about all most put on them, so there aren't just a whole lot of them around with a lot of hours on them. I would expect one, with proper maintenance, to last more than a lifetime for most of us. And like I said, that's my opinion; no proof.

HardWorker, I've no personal experience with cab Kubotas, but the only time I've heard of such a problem was an M6800, and the mechanics found that the only problem was debris in the front end from dust, seed, etc. that accumulated there while he was cutting hay and mowing pastures. The solution was simply washing it out, and the AC worked fine again.

James D, I think you're right about the shipping pressure. And although I've never seen it mentioned in a tractor owner's manual, I recently bought a new Sears lawn tractor (riding mower) and the manual says "The tires on your tractor were overinflated at the factory for shipping purposes. Correct tire pressure is important for best cutting performance. Reduce tire pressure to PSI shown in "PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS" section of this manual."

Both Howse and Rhino make different models and I'm just not familiar with them. The Howse 500 I had was their lightest duty one, and the only Rhinos I've seen were a little heavier duty, but I don't know the model designations.

Troy, I'm normally an advocate of "get the biggest thing you can afford and still have room to maneuver", but you mention a finish mower, and the L4610 is going to be a pretty big and heavy tractor for a lawn. However, I guess if you get turf tires on it, it shouldn't do too much damage. And it would be a great tractor for getting the place in shape, and may be just fine even afterwards, but I would have to consider it a bit of overkill.LOL

I wouldn't worry about hurting the hydro, but depending on the type of soil, moisture content, size of plow shares, depth you try to plow, etc., your tractor may (or may not) be able to pull it without just spinning your wheels. Of course, your local dealer may be familiar with the terrain and know that it will work.

There are a number of liquids used to fill tires for ballast; calcium chloride, antifreeze, windshield washer fluid, "beet juice", etc. and there are a number of "foams" used to fill tires, primarily to prevent flats, but which also serve as ballast. The "polyfilled" tires refers to one of these types of flat proof foams.

Greenjeans, I agree that the male/female connectors are "usually" as you say, but at least some of the Kubota loaders have the female connector on the hose and the male connector on the valve. I was a little surprised when I got my B2710 and saw that.

Yep, I understand about that ambulance, Charlie. The night we spent in Fort St. John (because of weather), we tied down the 152, a young couple also there in a 152 tied it down, and a fellow in a 180 tied it down, but the Stagger Wing owner rented a hangar and we helped him roll it inside for the night.LOL

Jim, there's just no doubt the Mule would be a better farm/ranch machine. My brother had one until recently and a few years ago I took a rancher neighbor on it to do some fence repairs and after he saw what kind of gulleys we could go through, brush piles we could go over, etc., he promptly went out and bought one just like it. Can shift between High/Low range, 2WD/4WD, differential lock for the rear wheels, etc. A real workhorse.
